RESETTING EARTH: INCHING TOWARDS NET-ZERO EMISSION REGION

Vibgyor N.E Foundation has been spearheading various activities across Northeast India in the environment and sustainable development domains. The Foundation organized the first-ever Northeast Green Summit in 2016. This was the first such initiative in Northeastern India in a bid to ensure sustainable development of the region with an integrated approach. Besides various technical sessions on sustainable development, various nature-inspired cultural events to promote conservation of nature and other out-of-the-box events, aimed at the common man of the region to portray the connection of environment with the tradition, art and culture of Northeast India, were organised. So far, six editions of the Summit have been succesfully held across the length and breadth of the region. The Foundation aims to conserve the natural and cultural heritage of Northeast India by bringing together stakeholders from all walks of life to deliberate, share experiences and propose solutions to some of the unique challenges being faced in the region, with the underlying theme of ‘Green Northeast, Clean Northeast’.

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments, seven inter-disciplinary academic centres and five schools covering all the major engineering , science, healthcare, management and humanities disciplines, offering B.Tech., B.Des., M.A., M.Des., M.Tech., M.Sc., MBA and Ph.D. programmes. 

Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments. Besides its laurels in teaching and research, IIT Guwahati has been able to fulfil the aspirations of people of the North East region to a great extent since its inception in 1994.
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati’s campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.
IIT Guwahati is the only academic institution in India that occupied a place among the top 100 world universities – under 50 years of age – ranked by the London-based Times Higher Education (THE) in the year 2014 and continues to maintain its superior position even today in various International Rankings. IIT Guwahati gained rank 41 globally in the ‘Research Citations per Faculty’ category and overall 395 rank in the QS World University Rankings 2022 released recently. IIT Guwahati has retained the 7th position among the best engineering institutions of the country in the ‘India Rankings 2021’ declared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Education. IIT Guwahati has been also ranked 2nd in the ‘Swachhata Ranking’ conducted by the Govt. of India. Recently, IIT Guwahati has been ranked as the top-ranked University in 2019 for IT developers by HackerRank in the Asia-Pacific region.

Guwahati Biotech Park

Guwahati Biotech Park (GBP), the visionary project of Govt. of Assam, is spearheading the biotech popularization & entrepreneurship growth in North-Eastern part of the country. Guwahati Biotech Park, with the support & association of Department of Biotechnology, GoI and IIT Guwahati, have started the Technology Incubation Centre, the first Incubation Centre in Biotechnology & allied areas in eastern India. The incubation centre is providing ready-to- use modular laboratory space for lease, instrument facilities and other technical & non-technical support facilities.

Govt. of Assam has already ensured promoting & supporting biotechnology research & business growth in the state and the region as well through an attractive Biotechnology Policy with a host of incentives, supports, grants etc. To sensitize and fuel-up the Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship ecosystem in the state, GBP is organizing a series of awareness cum acceleration drives for start-ups and joint hand in the NE Research Conclave with key feathers viz. Expert Talks (Innovation, Incubation, Start-up, Entrepreneurship, Funding/Finance, Management, IPR, Marketing, Mentorship, Govt. Support- infrastructure & policy support/incentives etc, Idea Pitching on Innovation & start-up by promising/new start-ups in the sector; Knowledge Sharing & Idea Exchange, State Govt. Support – Assam Biotech Policy; Central Govt. Support Schemes etc. As a first endeavor of the Park`s activities an Incubation Centre namely Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) has been established. TIC is offering ready-to-use modular laboratories equipped with modern laboratory work stations and other utilities for leasing out to startup entrepreneurs/companies interested in pursuing their R&D activities in biotechnology and related areas where they can translate their research ideas into commercialisable technologies as well as for up-gradation of existing technologies without risking huge investments in terms of infrastructure and equipment. Apart from modular laboratories, TIC is offering instrument/equipment support required for R&D activities through specialized facilities having modern & sophisticated equipment. The facilities are: Central Analytical Instrumentation Facility, Bioprospecting Facility, Micropropagation Facility, Herbal Extraction Facility, Fermentation Facility and Bioinformatics Facility. These instrumentation services are available on nominal pay and use basis.

Venue

Itanagar is the capital of the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, the city is home to medieval Ita Fort and the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum, which exhibits textiles and handicrafts. The nearby Gompa, a yellowroofed Buddhist temple, was consecrated by the Dalai Lama. West of town is Geker Sinying, also known as Ganga Lake, surrounded by forests, orchids and ferns. One of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in India, Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary covering an area of 140.30 sq km is located in Naharlagun near Itanagar, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh.
